About 1,000 people are set to be removed from Telford's electoral register if they do not register within the coming weeks.

Telford & Wrekin Council has been visiting households in the borough which have yet to return electoral register household inquiry forms.

But now they are preparing to send out final letters to encourage residents to register.

Emily Taylor, spokeswoman for the council, said: "We now have about 1,000 people who will be removed from the electoral register at the end of the year if they don't respond.

"The way that people register changed last year and each individual in a household must now do this via the directgov website. We have sent reminders and knocked on the doors of many of these people. They will be receiving a final letter shortly.

"Some people may be confused as they got to vote in May's elections and their name appeared on household form but the government has now specified they need to be removed in December unless they explicitly reply to the letter we have sent."

Reminders have been sent to about 23,000 homes which have not yet returned their forms.

Each household received an annual inquiry form listing all those who are registered to vote. This form must be updated and returned to the council so that anyone not already individually registered to vote can be given details on how to do so.

It's possible to complete the form online at www.gov.uk/reg ister-to-vote
