More than 170 homes will be built on a new estate on the outskirts of Shrewsbury, councillors have agreed.

The homes off Mousecroft Lane and Longden Road to the south west of the town will be built along with new roads, a play area and wildlife corridor.

Full plans for 175 homes submitted by Welshpool-based Wyro Developments Ltd, which already had outline permission, were approved by Shropshire Council's central planning committee yesterday.

The decision came despite objections from local residents who were concerned over an expected rise in traffic and the potential loss of wildlife habitats.

Opponents claimed that schools in the locality would not be able to cope with increased pupil numbers. Longden Parish Council had said it was concerned about flooding and drainage issues at the site.

Councillor Roger Evans, who represents the Longden ward, said: "The parish council had also raised concerns about cyclists and pedestrians who will be using the road and the lack of footpath."

"How are people living on the development going to get to schools, shops and other facilities safely? The footpath that is there at present is not suitable."

But it was pointed out that a new footpath will skirt the development and will provide safe access for those wishing to use it.

Tim Rogers, area planning manager for Shropshire Council, said: "There is a footpath on the plan leading to the north west of the development and to Mousecroft Lane."
