A Premier Inn hotel in the county could double in size under expansion plans put forward by management.

The hotel at Harmer Hill, near Wem, has 20 bedrooms, but another 21 would be added if Shropshire Council approves the plans.

The applicants say their plans would create construction jobs and five hotel/restaurant positions once the extension opens. David Christmas, project manager at Premier Inn, said the expansion was needed to meet "customer demand".

Shropshire Council should make a final decision on the application by July 2.

Mr Christmas said the hotel chain hoped work could start in the late summer with the extension opening early next year.

In its application, Premier and its parent company Whitbread, said the hotel is one of its best performers in the region.
