The Royal Oak Hotel was bought by the Bulldog Hotel Group, which already has premises in Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Gloucestershire and County Durham.

The company's business model sees traditional hotels turned into profitable all-day venues.

Kevin Charity, Bulldog's founder and managing director, said: "We're delighted to have acquired the Royal Oak; it is a real gem of a hotel, acting as a hub for visitors and local residents for centuries.

"We will be investing in all areas of the hotel, including completing the bedroom refurbishments started by the previous owners and working with the team to develop the food and drink offering, which we see as a real opportunity."

The Grade II listed 25-bedroom Royal Oak has had only three previous owners since opening its doors in the 18th century and has welcomed visitors over the years including the Queen, who dined there in 2010.

The hotel's previous owner, Malcolm Bebb, said: "The Royal Oak has an amazing heritage in Welshpool and the past 10 years have been no exception.

"The hotel has hosted many memorable occasions, from the recent government public inquiry for windfarms, to the all-time high of having HM Queen and Prince Philip for lunch. However after 10 years, we decided to sell the hotel in order to expand our existing farming businesses.

"We thank all our loyal staff and customers for their dedicated custom and service over the past 10 years and wish Bulldog Hotel Group ongoing success in Welshpool."

Bulldog Hotels specialises in finding high quality coaching inns and revitalising their offer across food, drink and accommodation to attract tourists as well and local and business trade.
