An online petition is calling for action to to improve safety at Wem level crossing.

The e-petition has been set up to force a parliamentary debate on problems at the busy crossing. Fresh calls have been made for the level crossing to be manned again.

It comes after the latest in a series of incidents, when automated safety barriers failed to close despite lights warning of an approaching train on Sunday night.

The petition, set up by Sarah Sumner, says: "This petition is for action to be taken in order to safeguard members of the public, rail users, road users and pedestrians alike. The current automated system has failed on more than this one occasion and it is time the crossing becomes manned once again and appropriate safeguards made in line with legislation."
