Between 80 and 100 cows were also moved to safety as the fire took hold of the building in Hogstow, near Minsterley.

Firefighters battled through the night to bring the fire under control after it broke out at about 6pm yesterday.

Four appliances including the water carrier were sent from Bishop's Castle, Craven Arms, Minsterley and Oswestry.

A relief crew was sent out at 10pm to continue dampening down the fire, which destroyed the barn.

A spokeswoman for Shropshire Fire and Rescue said: "When the initial call came in were told there could be cows in the barn.

"But it soon became apparent they were in a separate part of the building and not actually in the vicinity of the fire.

"There were up to 100 cows in total and all were accounted for."
