War poet Wilfred Owen, Shrewsbury's town crier Martin Wood and Sabrina, goddess of the River Severn have been immortalised in the new "portrait bench" in Smithfield Road.

Shropshire Star readers were asked to vote for their favourite "local heroes" to feature in the art sculpture.

More than 15,000 votes were cast in an online poll with readers selecting Wilfred Owen and the goddess Sabrina from a list of nine nominees.

Martin Wood, Shrewsbury's town crier since 1986, was chosen by pupils at the town's primary schools.

The £5,000 "portrait bench" has been funded by sustainable transport charity Sustrans and is sited on the riverside between Severn Terrace and the boxing gym.
