Six-year-old girl drowns after falling into canal

A six-year-old girl has died after falling into a canal in the Midlands.

Imie Harrison died after falling into the water near to the Wolverley Court Lock, on the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, in Wolverley, near Kidderminster. It is believed she was playing with her twin brother and two other six-year-olds.

She was rescued from the canal by emergency services and taken by police helicopter to Birmingham Children's Hospital at around 6.20pm yesterday. But the youngster, from the Springfield Park estate, later died.

West Mercia Police said officers had attended the scene in Springfield Park along with the fire service and an ambulance crew.

Superintendent Kevin Purcell, police commander in North Worcestershire, said: "Our thoughts are with the family at this time. They remain very traumatised by the loss of their daughter."
