Statistics released by market researcher TNS show that deliveries in the SY, TF and WV postcodes were above targets set by Royal Mail for the period between April and December 2012.

The results are based on 130,000 sample letters and parcels sent to 5,400 addresses.

Telford and the surrounding area received the best service with 94.9 per cent of first class mail delivered on time – the day after posting.

The survey showed that homes in the majority of Shropshire – covered by the SY postcode – received 93.6 per cent of first class mail on time, as did homes in the WV area, which covers Bridgnorth.

Royal Mail aims to deliver 93 per cent of all first class mail by the following day.

Lisa Walton, Royal Mail delivery director, said: "This is traditionally Royal Mail's toughest quarter with a steep rise in mail volumes and the likelihood of bad weather.

"Our postmen and women work extremely hard to deliver to some of the most demanding Quality of Service standards in the whole of Europe."

In addition to the first class postal service, Royal Mail exceeded its second class mail targets.

During the same April to December period, the company delivered 98.6 per cent of second class mail within three working days after posting.

Figures released also show that Royal Mail performed better than set targets when delivering standard retail parcels, with 96.2 per cent of parcels ordered online delivered on time.
