Former England international Paul Merson scored his first competitive goal for seven years as he came out of retirement to play alongside fellow Sky Sports pundit Chris Kamara for Welshpool Town last night.

Merson, who won two top-flight league titles for Arsenal and won 21 caps for his country, headed home to give Welshpool the lead in the 33rd minute.

It was his first goal since 2005, when he was player-manager of League One side Walsall.

Welshpool eventually went down 4-1 to high-flying Newbridge-on-Wye in the Spar Mid Wales League.

Kamara was appearing for the second time in the lily white of Welshpool after the club was featured on Sky's Soccer Saturday show hosted by Jeff Stelling.

More than 500 fans turned out to watch the game.

And Welshpool manager Dave Jones said that the two players had helped to raise the profile of the club and had secured its immediate future.
