More than 70 per cent of businesses in Tenbury Wells which responded to a survey have backed controversial plans for a Tesco superstore to be built on the town's former cattle market, it has been revealed.

The results of the poll conducted by members of Tenbury Town Council were revealed at an extraordinary council meeting at the Pump Rooms last night.

It comes despite fears from campaigners that the new store would have a devastating impact on independent traders in the town.

But town councillors still voted to oppose the plans last night by five votes to four ahead of a final decision which is expected to be made by members of Malvern Hills District Council in November.

It is Tesco's third attempt to gain permission for a supermarket on the site.
