The finalists in this year’s Just The Job competition have been named.

The Shropshire Star is currently running a competition in association with local car dealership Furrows to give away an e-media marketing role within the firm.

After a round of interviews held by Shropshire Star head of features Carl Jones, and Bill Cooper and Dave Farthing from Furrows, two finalists have been selected to face the public vote.

Graduate Jonathan Hignett, from Pontesbury, and marketing manager David Fradgley, who is looking to move to the area from Stourbridge, have been selected as the two finalists in the competition.

The panel of judges will now make their choice for the winner. But readers of the Shropshire Star’s website, www.shropshirestar.com, can also have their say on who should be given the role by voting online.

A third and final vote will be cast by the audience at this year’s Shropshire Business Awards at Telford International Centre on June 3.

David describes himself as “an ambitious, experienced, innovative and creative marketing manager with a background in marketing strategy, brand management and retail promotion’, and has experience in marketing.

He has a degree in graphic design, and a certificate in marketing.

Jonathan, meanwhile, says he has “a combination of sales experience, creativity and experience [which] would make me ideal for this position”.

He has travelled widely, and a degree in design. He is also studying for a postgraduate degree in English through the Open University.

I voted for Jonathan Hignett. I think young people should get the opportunity to start a career after graduation! I also like Jonathan’s personality and the way he can express himself while David Fradgley sounds a bit boring and already has a job (so…why does he want to leave?). And Jonathan Hignett is local! :)

Is there any reason that you can’t wish to improve your life through gaining a better, more fulfilling job? Dave may have a job but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t strive to be ambitious and climb the ladder!

And as for some saying he seems boring, how can you judge someone on a couple of minutes of them telling potential employers how they can improve their business? I can imagine he may have been nervous and I know I would perhaps seem quiet in that situation, I think from his little grin at the end there’s a lot more to Mr Fradgley than you get from his little edited speil.

This seems to be particularly unfair comment; the personal attack on the candidate David Fradgley as ‘boring’ strikes me as unprofessional and unnecessary- you are judging this on a two minute video, where I presume their brief was to convince the company why they should work for them, and describe how they may enhance the team, not simply to describe their holidays.

You could ask yourself why a graduate (presumably who graduated in the last academic year, i.e. 2010, if not earlier) is still unemployed as suggested by the first post, perhaps his lack of experience will hinder his application here.

The idea that someone should receive preferential treatment as they are ‘local’ is ridiculous and blatant discrimination.

I am saying this not to advocate a particular candidate, but feel it is unfair for one sided comments to be posted. Both are obviously keen for the job, may the best man win!

Fair point Emma! David seems to have a wide range of skills which are necessary to fulfil this role and explains in detail of where he can improve the company and obviously has good grasp on the subject area.

Whereas, Jon’s key skills are ‘im local and i do actually drive.’ Well done Jon, showing your initiative. I possess both of those skills, maybe i should have the job.

I would personally vote for David. They both have previous media background, both do charity work which is commendable but David appears to have a wider range of experience and Jonathan would rather talk about his holidays!

How can you tell by that interview whether an individual is or is not boring? At the end of the day the video is only a small taste of the entire interview and they will both be under a great deal of stress.

Regardless of whether the individual is from the local community or not, it will more than likely go on what that individual can bring to the company, not where they are from. Someone originating from outside the local community may be able to bring in fresh ideas.

Jonathan’s travels sound interesting however I feel it is irrelevant, Jonathan did seem to be grasping at straws.

I strongly agree that people need to climb the ladder, graduates or not, in this day and age there is little choice for people other than to start at the bottom and work their way up.

Emma has made her fair point about Ray’s comment about David, but then she also made a non very professional one about Jonathan!
And Sarah… you’re just being mean now!!
It is very true that you can’t judge someone after a two minutes video, especially after someone edited them, so let’s please refrain from posting comments that may offend the two canditates!

David has a lot of experience but I also know how hard is to find a job when you don’t have that many years of work experience behind you, that’s why Jonathan was probably talking about his personal experience instead.
