A rescue package is being put together in a bid to save a Shropshire primary school from closure, governors have revealed.

Campaigners fighting to prevent the axe falling on Onny Primary School in Onibury, near Craven Arms, are hoping to come up with a federation agreement with one or more neighbouring schools.

Joe Roberts, vice chairman of governors at the school, said informal talks had been held with representatives of three nearby schools about a potential arrangement.

The issue was discussed at an official public consultation meeting at the school last night, where more than 70 people turned out to quiz Shropshire Council chiefs about why Onny Primary School had been earmarked for closure.

Mr Roberts said: "There are three schools that have expressed an interest in talking to us about making savings and the possible development of federation arrangements. We are due to meet representatives of two of the schools this week."

David Taylor, Shropshire Council's director of people's services, said no firm proposal had been put forward for the school to be involved in a federation.

But he said the authority would welcome any ideas brought to the table as part of the consultation process.
