New Archdeacon of Salop is named
Monday 14th February 2011, 7:29PM GMT.
The new Archdeacon of Salop has been named.
The Reverend Paul Thomas will take over from the Venerable John Hall, who retired at the end of the year after 12 years as Archdeacon.
Mr Thomas, currently priest in charge at Doxey in Staffordshire, will be officially confirmed in his new role at a service at Lichfield Cathedral on May 29.
The Right Reverend Mark Rylands, Bishop of Shrewsbury, welcomed the appointment: “I am delighted that Paul has been appointed next Archdeacon of Salop.
“He is an experienced parish priest whose service in both rural and urban areas has been greatly valued and appreciated.”
Preparing for his new role, Mr Thomas said: “Having worked in the Lichfield Diocese for six years, I have the greatest admiration for so many people, both clergy and lay, who are maintaining their church life against very difficult odds and sharing the love of God with their communities.
“I hope that as an archdeacon, with the wide remit it will give me across Shropshire, that I will be able to make my contribution to that great endeavour.”

we have a bishop and an archdeacon, so why is shrewsbury not a city. it is the queens diamond jubilee next february 6th and there is a competition to appoint some cities to celebrate this occasion. the closing date for entries is 27.5.11. so far southend have entered whose main claim to fame is 4 whelk stalls and a long pier.
considering shrewsbury’s history, it was the seat of goverment for successive kings for nearly 200 years, successive kings held court in shrewsbury.
it should not be necessary for our ancient borough to enter some micky mouse competition, shrewsbury should be a county by right.
in the middle ages one of the kings issued a charter to give the ancient borough the status of city but the burgesses of the town declined it,
how much longer is st chads cathedral to be kept at bay by whelk stalls and a long pier?

There are so many points in your comment that are wrong I don’t know where to start. St Chad’s Cathedral? Erm.

[I have the greatest admiration for so many people, both clergy and lay, who are maintaining their church life against very difficult odds and sharing the love of God with their communities.]
I have a lot of admiration for those of us who live kind and generous lives despite all the strife and power struggles that religions bring to our world.
My greatest disappointment has been that women have striven to get on this moralistic, power driven and often lucrative bandwagon that has always in the past been the hobby of the males.

I would like to point out that the photo is showing Ludlow’s St Laurence’s Church… which lies in the diocese of Hereford and not Lichfield and therefore not really associated with the Archdeacon of Salop! Shropshire is only a diocese in the Catholic organisation, not the Church of England. (One reason Shrewsbury isn’t a city..) And no, a bishop doesn’t have to cover a diocese. It’s all very confusing, I know..!
