Controversial plans to put up a 48ft high mobile phone mast in Telford have been turned down by councillors after more than 170 residents objected.

Telford & Wrekin Council's plans board last night unanimously refused to grant planning permission for O2 and Vodafone to erect the telecommunications pole in Priorslee Avenue, Priorslee.

More than 45 members of the public applauded as councillors refused permission for the mast.

They said they did not believe alternative sites had been fully explored and the appearance and location of the mast was unsuitable.

Councillors added they did not believe proper procedure had been followed during the application process.

Before the meeting, more than 170 residents had lodged written objections to the plans, and a petition against the mast was signed by almost 150 residents.

Concerns included the location of the mast near to a children's play and picnic area.

Damian Hosker, addressing the meeting on behalf of O2 and Vodafone, told councillors the mast was needed because of public demand caused by more people using phones like iPhone and Blackberry.

He added consultation had been carried out.
