Public meeting to be held over Wem fires work

A public meeting will be held in Wem in the next few weeks to tell residents of the safety work carried out at a tyre depot in the wake of three major fires in the last 19 months.

The meeting follows the latest fire at Kingpin Tyres on Wem Industrial Estate in July.

It will be held in Edinburgh House, Wem at the end of this month or the beginning of December.

Residents raised fears of smoke blowing over their homes following the latest incident – and one person living near the site threatened to leave the town over concerns for his health.

Town councillor Peggy Carson said she received lots of e-mails and letters about concerns with the fires.

She said: “I know a doctor from Wales who is very concerned about the health of people in Wem after reading about the fires and wants to attend the public meeting.”

The company has been co-operating with the local authorities and other agencies to improve the safety of piles of rubber material stored at the site, which were the source of the fires. Regular inspections have also been carried out to make sure the conditions have been adhered to.

Shropshire Council spokesman Gareth Proffitt said: “A public meeting will take place at the end of this month or the beginning of next month to update residents of the work that has been carried out on the site.

“Representatives from Shropshire PCT, the Health Protection Agency, Shropshire Fire and Rescue and Shropshire Council’s environmental health team will be at the meeting.

“We urge as many people in Wem to turn out to the meeting as possible.”

Experts monitored the air quality in the town after the latest blaze and were satisfied the smoke posed no long-term health risks.
