"Much-loved" William Hubbard, of Beech Drive, Shifnal, was fatally wounded in the collision, which happened on the A464 in Shifnal, shortly after midnight on Saturday. He was a back-seat passenger in the car.

The three other people in the BMW all received minor injuries. The driver, also a 19-year-old man, was taken to hospital for treatment to a facial injury.

Mr Hubbard's family issued a joint tribute, saying: “We, the family, would like to ask that our privacy is respected at this very sad time.

“William was a much loved son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, boyfriend and friend to many and will be sorely missed by all.”

The crash led to the closure of the road for several hours, with police not announcing its reopening until around 8.30am on Saturday.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said they attended the scene in the early hours of Saturday morning and had to use cutting equipment in order for the ambulance service to gain access to the occupants of the car.

A spokesperson for SFRS said: "We did attend and sent two crews from Telford Central along with an operations officer.

"Crews used cutting equipment to assist the ambulance service so they could get to the casualty."

A spokesperson for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 0.11am on Saturday to a road traffic collision involving a car that had collided with a fence on Williams Crescent in Shifnal. Two ambulances, a paramedic officer and a MERIT trauma doctor and critical care paramedic attended the scene.

"Upon arrival we found two men. The first man was a passenger in the car. Unfortunately, it became clear that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed deceased at the scene.

"The second man was the driver of the car. He was assessed and had sustained serious injuries that were not life threatening. He received treatment at the scene and was conveyed to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital under blue light conditions for further treatment."
