Branden Grace’s par putt on the 18th hole secured the record.

As Branden Grace made his way through the back nine on day three of The Open at Royal Birkdale, interest grew as the South African moved closer and closer to an unprecedented round of 62 at a men’s major.

And then, with three feet between him and the 18th hole, the 29-year-old made history.

Grace’s round of 62 beat the 29 other rounds of 63 before him – such was the scale of the achievement that a hashtag was borne in anticipation of the record: #62watch (eyes emoji optional).

Eight birdies and no bogeys – it’s a great achievement, but this golf writer called it, and with good reason.

The course is not at its most threatening, as an eight-under par round from Grace demonstrated, and some fans wondered whether the record might not even last the day.

You know conditions are a bit easier when your four-under par round of 66 gets completely overlooked.

Unlucky Jason.
