Simon Yates takes over lead in Vuelta
The Briton now holds a one second lead over Spaniard Alejandro Valverde.
Simon Yates edged into the overall lead at the 2018 Vuelta a Espana as American Benjamin King claimed his second stage win.
Briton Yates finished Sunday’s stage nine in ninth place, two minutes and 49 seconds behind King, but now holds a one second lead over Spaniard Alejandro Valverde in the general classification.
Valverde’s Movistar team-mate, Colombia’s Nairo Quintana, sits third overall, 14 seconds adrift of Mitchelton-Scott rider Yates.
Team Dimension Data’s King, 29, emerged from an 11-strong breakaway group to finish 48 seconds ahead of second-placed Dutch rider Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo).
BMC Racing’s Dylan Teuns, of Belgium, finished third, two minutes and 38 seconds behind King on the 200.8km mountain stage from Talavera de la Reina to La Covatilla.
King timed his finish to perfection, breaking free of the leading group, which at one stage had built a nine-minute lead over the peloton, with 19 kilometres remaining.
