British-born NFL star Jay Ajayi has been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The running back has left the Miami Dolphins after the ascendant Eagles parted with a fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft.

Ajayi, 24, was born in London before moving to the United States as a child, and was a fifth-round draft pick for Miami from Boise State college in 2015.

He established himself as a key part of the Dolphins offence last season, running for 1,272 yards and eight touchdowns in the regular season including back-to-back 200-yard games against the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills.

He was bottled up by the Steelers in the play-offs, though, and has failed to find the end zone this season in a struggling Fins offence after quarterback Ryan Tannehill was lost for the season to injury and Jay Cutler came out of retirement to replace him.

With the Eagles, he will have the chance to carry the load for an apparent Super Bowl contender and ease the pressure on second-year quarterback Carson Wentz, whose 19 touchdowns against five interceptions have seen the team to a league-leading 7-1 record.

Ajayi will compete for carries with former New England Patriots power back LeGarrette Blount, with the likes of Wendell Smallwood and Corey Clement providing receiving options out of the backfield.
