Alarm bells are ringing for a south Shropshire sportsman as he prepares to face the rugby might of Wales.

Ludlow firefighter George Jacks has been selected for the third consecutive year to turn out for the England fire service's national rugby squad.

The 26-year-old, who plays as a flanker for Midlands 3 West (North) outfit Ludlow Rugby Club, will wear the red rose tomorrow.

But he'll be hoping for better fortune this time round when he trots out at the Newport ground in Wales in front of an expected crowd of around 5,000.

"Unfortunately we have lost every time I've played! But hopefully this time it will be third time lucky and we will win," said Jacks, an on call firefighter for the past three years based at Ludlow Fire Station.

He got his first call-up to the national fire service squad in 2014 when his team lost narrowly to Wales 27-24. Last year England were on the wrong end of a 52-33 scoreline.

"Every national match is very intense and fast paced," added Jacks, a former Ludlow School pupil who works as a supervisor at the Ludlow Nut Company.

"I am the only Shropshire player to represent the English fire service team and it is very special to be picked for the national side and play at that level."
