It's a meteoric rise for the 24-year-old, who played for Shrewsbury between 2006 and 2008 and progressed quickly to the Sundorne Castle first team after starting in the seconds.

He also had a spell with Bishop's Castle in his younger days before studying at Hartpury College, a renowned breeding ground for future Gloucester stars.

"Tom was always so dedicated it was unbelievable," said Mattie Morris, Shrewsbury captain during Savage's time at the club.

"He was always extremely fit and it's great to see him doing so well."

Savage, comfortable in the second row or at blindside flanker, has been chosen to replace Jim Hamilton as Gloucester's new captain following his move to top French club Montpellier.

The Shrewsbury old-boy will have British Lions centre Billy Twelvetrees as his vice-captain at Kingsholm.

"Gloucester Rugby is a special club, one with a long, proud history and it's a privilege to be asked to captain the side," said a delighted Savage.

"When I first started training with the team just over three years ago, I never imagined that I would one day be captain."
