It was Solberg who was quickest on the opening stage of the day but by stage three he had slipped to third place behind both his Finnish team-mate and the Citroen of Sebastien Loeb.

After a mid-day service halt in Newtown, competitors tackled the three stages for a second time and this time Latvala was unbeatable, setting fastest time on every stage.

Solberg moved back ahead of Loeb, finishing nine seconds ahead of the Frenchman and 12 behind Latvala.

In the national event that runs in parallel with the World Championship rally, the Oswestry pairing of Paul Walker and Vern Brown lie in third place in their Subaru Impreza, while Market Drayton duo Philip and Jonathan Edwards are in sixth place
