'Every minute matters' title-chasing Telford Tigers are told

Head coach Tom Watkins will remind his players ‘every minute matters’ when Telford Tigers resume their title challenge this weekend.

The Tigers travel to Sutton Sting on Saturday night, before hosting Whitley Warriors on Sunday, aiming to further cement their place at the top of the NIHL Moralee Conference.

Watkins’ men beat both opponents in convincing fashion earlier in the season but the coach is eager to warn against complacency.

He said: “We can’t afford to overlook anyone. The last time we played Sutton they had a couple of key players missing.

“Whitley have the league’s second highest scorer, Ben Campbell, in their team.

“You just never know what can happen. Our aim must be to win every period, every shift.

“If you concentrate on getting the small things right, then in my experience the larger picture takes care of itself.”

The Tigers went top of the table following a thrilling 6-5 win over Solway Sharks last Sunday.

But they sit only a point ahead of Sheffield Steeldogs, in second, while third-placed Hull Pirates sit just a point further back.

Watkins said: “I don’t think there is particularly any more pressure being top of the table.

“There are big expectations at all three clubs. We have seen the lead change a few times in the past few weeks and the chances are it will do so again. There is still a long way to go.”
