Telford Hornets are buzzing after home success

Telford Hornets are sitting pretty at the top if the Midlands 3 West North standings after continuing their free-scoring start to the season.

After opening their campaign with a fine 44-0 win at Edwardians, Hornets kicked off their home fixtures with a resounding 51-17 success against Handsworth.

It took until 15 minutes for Hornets to register the first score courtesy of a penalty from Stefan Hildred.

But they soon added to their tally when, after being held up close to the line, the won a ruck and switched to ball to the right for Liam Evans to score. Hildred added the conversion.

Handsworth hit back with a converted penalty try, but the Hornets quickly regained control with two quick-fire scores.

Firstly, Denham Samuels crossed the line with Chris Parry them repeating the feat. Hildred added the extras on both occasions to make it 24-7 at the break.

Handsworth rallied at the start of second half and cut the deficit with two unconverted scores.

But Hornets then rallied impressively to take a firm grip on proceedings.

Parry finished off a good run to score out wide before an interception resulted in Ben Lewis touching down.

Hildred then landed a penalty to make it 37-17 before the hosts signed off with two more tries.

Russell Fletcher forced his way over the line with Hildred’s trusty boot adding the conversion before Peter Jones gathered the loose ball following a Handsworth lineout and won the race to the line. Hildred landed the extra two points to complete the scoring.

Shrewsbury are still chasing their first league win after going down 30-13 at Willenhall.
