Vernon, from Muxton, became Telford’s latest international athlete following her impressive display in the intermediate girls’ javelin at the England Schools Championships at Birmingham.

The Thomas Telford School student picked up a silver medal in the Second City to earn a place in the team for the trip to Ireland.

And she impressed again at the Morton Athletic Stadium where she defied windy conditions to come second with a throw of 42.91m. All Irish champion Kate O Connor threw 49.26m to win the event.

Vernon’s best throw this season came at the Shropshire Championships in May when she threw 46.51m at the Telford Stadium which puts her third in the current UK rankings.

Coached at the Telford Stadium by Shaun Reynolds, she has thrown over 40 metres on 10 occasions.

And there is more action to come for Vernon with the Midland and England Championships taking place next month.
