Bridgnorth running duo hit new heights

Bridgnorth Running Club took its international reputation to new heights – quite literally – with the exploits of two members.

Will Laye, aged 25, and girlfriend Emma Gould, 26, completed the gruelling Vertical Km as part of the Marathon du Mont Blanc in Chamonix in France – an astonishing one kilometre of ascent in a race of 3.8km.

Incredibly, Gould finished as the sixth lady overall in the 494-strong international class field, clocking 46mins 19secs – just three minutes behind the best uphill mountain runner in the world – while Laye was 81st in 48:36.

Laye said: “The winner is akin to the standard of Mo Farah so I’m overjoyed for Emma.

“The most quirky thing was a 20-second time gap between runners. It was really strange having a time trial interval but it gave the added incentive of to keep chasing the runners in front. There were several spots along the course where you required using a ladder to pull yourself up by a rope on rocky outcrops.”

Not content with that, the couple, who are taking time out to travel, are now preparing for their next adventure, in Switzerland this weekend.

And it’s another uphill race, the Montreal-Les-Rochers-de-Naye, over 18km involving 1,600m of ascent, followed by the CervinoXtrail mountain race a week later.
