Wolves skipper Conor Coady deserves an England call – Ryan Bennett

Ryan Bennett has hailed Conor Coady’s form as incomparable – as he called for the Wolves captain to win an England call-up.

Coady has been one of the stars of Wolves’ season so far at centre-half.

The 26-year-old has not missed a minute of the campaign in either league or cups, but has been overlooked by England boss Gareth Southgate, who suggested last week that England’s preference for a back-four has hindered Coady’s chances of a call-up.

Coady’s fellow defender Bennett believes his skipper is worthy of selection for the national side.

“I don’t think there is anyone else in the country that’s had the form he has from where he has come from,” Bennett said.

“Us being a back three may have something to do with it. Obviously (England) have gone from a three to a four. It’s something you would have to ask them. I think Conor should be in there with a shout.

“For me, playing alongside him every day and seeing what other clubs are doing I do think he deserves it and I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks that.

“It’s a shame it hasn’t come his way yet but hopefully he can in the future.”

Bennett has also enjoyed an impressive season in Wolves’ back-line, prompting some suggestions of a call-up.

However, the former England Under-21 international believes his chances have gone.

“Personally for me I’m a bit older so haven’t thought about it,” Bennett, aged 29, added.

“For me those days have gone. I look more at Conor’s situation and maybe that’s the one you are turning heads a little bit. “It’s not something we ever really talk about.

“Every game is a big stage at this level. There are people watching every game. the manager, the staff of England will have been at the games.

“They haven’t put Conor in yet but hopefully they can do that soon.”
