Rafa Benitez: We should have stopped Wolves equaliser

Newcastle chief Rafa Benitez did not blame Wolves' late equaliser on the officials – instead admitting they should have defended better.

The Magpies thought they were going to grab three vital points at Molineux after Isaac Hayden's tight-angled finish but were undone in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Willy Boly headed in.

Boly beat Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka to Adama Traore's cross, and when asked if he thought the shot-stopper was impeded by the Frenchman, Benitez said: "It was really disappointing to concede in the way that we conceded.

"They were pushing and we could do better. With this ball, we could do a little bit better.

"It was not very clear on the replay, but we have to defend the cross better.

"We know in England people will come up against the goalkeeper, so he has to be strong enough."

Newcastle are a point above the Premier League drop zone, and Benitez added: "We counter-attacked a couple of situations and could've done a bit better with the final pass."
