Steve Bull: It’s probably time to give Wolves winger Diogo Jota a break

Diogo Jota is yet to score a Premier League goal for Wolves and it is probably the time to take him out of the spotlight.

Jota is a very talented player – he tore through teams in the Championship last season and was an absolute joy to watch – but it just has not fallen for him so far this campaign.

You never want to change a winning team but, following Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Watford, it is certainly something for Nuno to take a good look at now.

Jota, who last scored in the 4-0 victory at Bolton in April which saw Wolves confirmed as the Championship title-winners, will be desperate to stay in the team.

When you are going through a barren run like that, 12 games in all competitions for him now, you just want the next game to come around as soon as possible to hopefully break your duck and get that much-needed boost in confidence.

And as soon as he does, I am sure it will be the start of a good run of goals from him this term.

There are quality players waiting in the wings though.

Ivan Cavaleiro has looked lively as a substitute over the past few weeks.

He has been a breath of fresh air, and it has been a similar story with Adama Traore – so at least one of those two deserves a chance to impress from the off.

I’d be tempted to let Cavaleiro loose and see what he can do over 90 minutes at Brighton this weekend.

Another player who did well after coming off the bench against Watford was Ruben Vinagre.

He caused a few problems with his willingness to drive forward from left wing-back.

There were no signs of him, at 19, being fazed by top-flight life and he has given Nuno something to think about. Fair play to him.

On the whole though, it was a disappointing afternoon. The players, after the international break where a lot of them travelled thousands of miles, were a bit lethargic – second to the ball.

You can afford to have one or two off the pace but Wolves had five or six not at the races, so let’s hope they start quickly at the Amex this weekend.
