Wolves under-21s lose to Mansfield Town in Checkatrade Trophy

A stunning free-kick from Portuguese youngster Pedro Goncalves couldn’t rescue Wolves under-21s from defeat in the Checktrade Trophy last night.

Following up from their goalless draw with Scunthorpe in the first game, Rob Edwards’s side went down 2-1 to League Two Mansfield Town at the One Call Stadium.

The Stags took the lead as early as the third minute when Jacob Mellis fired into the bottom corner.

The hosts started the second half just as well as the first, and doubled their lead two minutes after the break through former Walsall player Malvind Benning.

The West Bromwich-born defender brought the ball down following some pinball in the box and fired home.

Goncalves, who joined from Valencia in 2017, pulled a goal back for Wolves 15 minutes before the end with a gorgeous free-kick.

But the youngsters could not find an equaliser after that, leaving them on one point in Northern Group H.

On a night with several record low attendances, 131 Wolves fans braved the journey to the One Call Stadium, where the official gate was 1,112.

Wolves: Norris (GK), Giles, Ashley-Seal, Goncalves, Alves (Samuels 80’), Rasmussen, Diallo, Ennis, John, Kilman, Iorfa.
