David Edwards on Wolves' new Nuno era

David Edwards says Wolves' players have bought into Nuno Espirito Santo's ideas – and are 'streets ahead' of where they were a year ago.

Successive pre-season defeats have quelled Wolves' momentum ahead of tonight's trip to face Peterborough United.

But there's little concern with results in the Molineux camp, particularly given the players' tough training schedule which it's hoped will stand the squad in good stead this season.

And 31-year-old midfielder Edwards, despite the hard work, is enjoying life under Nuno.

He said: "It's really enjoyable, the professionalism is brilliant and behind the scenes everyone has got the players' interests at heart.

"Everyone is doing their utmost to make sure players are in the best possible shape going on to the football pitch.

"We've had a really tough pre-season to work a lot on the training ground to get the gaffer's ideas across.

"I don't think we were quite at it against Shrewsbury for whatever reason.

"Hopefully this week we can build. There's still a lot of work to do.

"Last season we were more of team that would press high up the pitch and move the ball forward quickly. It's completely different now, it's going to take time, but at this stage of pre-season compared to where we were a year ago...we're streets ahead.

"You look at the quality of the players we've brought in I think we've got one of the best squads in the Championship on paper. It's okay having that, you need to perform week in, week out. Everything's in place for us to go and do that."

Edwards skippered the side on Saturday, playing in the middle of Wolves' new 3-4-3 formation.

Having seen plenty of different regimes and playing styles during his time at Molineux, how does Edwards think the early signs look for the new campaign?

"It's a completely different way of playing but everyone's bought into it really well," he said.

"I think it'll be, hopefully, a successful season. We need to start well and get some momentum under our belt.

"You look at the three at the back, comfortable ball-players, all over the pitch...Nouha's looked brilliant, the likes of Pricey, Neves and Romain are suited to keeping the ball in that position and then the firepower of Cav, Zyro, Bright and Mason, Connor Ronan, people that can make it happen in the final third.

"It's a different concept in terms of the sport science, the conditioning and the way they go about it. Everything is completely measured to the last minute detail.

"Hopefully those percentages will make a difference.

"Nuno is very tactically aware of what he wants to do. The boys have really bought into it, we can see that how he wants to play can be effective.

"There's still bits of the game which we haven't quite grasped fully yet but that'll come in the next few weeks."
