Games between the close rivals are notoriously tight, and it again proved the case as a Callum Morris penalty early in the second period settled the issue.

The Saints had made a dream start when Aeron Edwards slotted in from a free-kick after just two minutes, but the Nomads were back on terms just five minutes later through Michael Bakare’s free-kick.

Both sides continued to threaten in a lively quarter-final tie, with TNS defending stoutly to repel the home side’s direct approach.

Edwards went close to giving the Saints an interval lead when heading wide, but the Nomads got their noses in front four minutes after the break when Morris converted from the spot following a challenge on Andy Owens.

Scott Ruscoe’s men pushed for a leveller, but the defiant Nomads held firm to seal a semi-final date with Bangor City next month.

Newtown are through after their 2-0 win at Llandudno, and will now meet Aberystwyth Town who were 3-1 winners at Carmarthen Town.
