The New Saints stunned in failed record attempt

Champions The New Saints suffered only their second defeat of the season in the Dafabet Welsh Premier after being toppled by Gap Connah's Quay at the Deeside Stadium.

Leading through a James Jones goal on 33 minutes, the Saints were pegged back when John Disney netted in a scramble from a corner on 75 minutes.

And substitute Declan Poole, who had provided the assist for the leveller, then crashed home the winner with eight minutes remaining with a stunning 15-yard volley.

Defeat saw TNS miss a chance of beating their best ever points haul of 77 set two years ago, although they still have four games left. They remain 23 points clear at the top.

Connah's Quay, chasing runners-up spot, were full of purpose throughout, and gained a deserved scalp to move second in the table on goal difference. Victory also gave the Nomads a timely boost ahead of the Welsh Cup semi-final between the sides on April 1.

They were soon on the front foot, with Nathan Woolfe having a 20-yard effort tipped over by keeper Paul Harrison and George Horan heading past the post.

Ryan Brobbel fired a free-kick wide at the other end, but TNS were in front on 33 minutes when Jones found the net after a goalmouth melee. Ex-TNS forward Mike Wilde and sub Les Davies had chances for Gap in the second half, and the hosts' pressure paid off on 75 minutes when Disney forced the ball in from a scramble following a corner by substitute Declan Poole.

And it was Poole who pounced for the winner, with his crisp volley giving Harrison no chance as the Nomads boosted hopes of automatic qualification for the Europa League.

It was definitely the late late show at the FBS Stadium last night as Barrow and Wrexham left it well into added time to get on the scoresheet.

While both sides crafted chances during the game it remained goalless as the fourth official signalled there would be six minutes of added time – and then things really got going.

First blood was drawn by the visitors as substitute Paul Rutherford latched on to Jonathan Flatt's sliced clearance and scored what he thought was the winning goal. The drama was far from over though as Moussa Diarra's header beat Chris Dunn with only seconds left in added time, salvaging a point for Barrow
