Dave Edwards: Characters and loan stars are key to Shrewsbury Town’s success

With everything still up in the air, there still needs to be a clear message from the football club to see which direction they’re heading.

Regardless of who is in charge next season, I believe we’ve seen a way Shrewsbury can be successful over recent years.

It happened under Paul Hurst and it’s happened again this season to a degree, and first of all it’s built on having a good dressing room with good characters.

At my second spell at the football club we didn’t have the right balance of characters in the dressing room. There were people with different agendas and it didn’t quite work.

But Steve Cotterill has worked so hard to get that balance right and everyone I speak to now says it’s a brilliant dressing room.

That gives you a fighting chance from the start. If you’re going to be the underdog in League One, which Shrewsbury are, you need a good group of players with good characters who can give their all.

That has been on show this season. First and foremost you need to try and create that team spirit and have a nucleus of players.
