Bernard McNally column: Flying Shrewsbury Town duo can be exciting options

I’d like to see Shaun Whalley and Ryan Giles start together for us.

That’s me here in my ivory tower but when you have two players like that then there’s got to be a way to fit them into a side.

They are both so direct and exciting.

And Saturday showed if you’ve got a strong squad then players can come on and do what’s needed.

It was such a great result against Coventry, to come back from 1-0 and look set for a point before suddenly all three subs combine and you get the dramatic winner – it was tremendous to see.

Shaun is one of my favourite players and has to play in the team even if it’s a more central role, like on Saturday, and Giles looks more suited to the left wing than a full-back.

The Wolves youngster has a terrific left foot, he can whip the ball in for great crosses.

Shaun notching his first goal in a while is good for both parties. Spells like that can happen, but the winner will do his confidence the world of good after an injury.

We know how talented he is, it would be good for Sam to see that talent come to fruition more constructively over the rest of the season.

It’s about getting the opportunity for two players to have three or four games on the bounce. It’s been a difficult run of games but we’re in a good position.

Even in Sam’s heart of hearts he’ll know the standard can improve.

There’s a lot more to come and that’s the exciting thing. It was a huge win for the Town that will generate more enthusiasm and confidence.

I can see a steady progression. Fans want to see more goals and everybody does. But sometimes the development of the team takes longer than what most fans anywhere would want.

Everybody wants a quick fix and sometimes that’s not possible.

We’re becoming a difficult side to beat and are up to 11th, just three points off the top six, it will give us real confidence.

Going to Blackpool is always difficult and they are up there this season.

But it’s one at the moment that the players will relish.

I see us going to Blackpool and really able to give a performance and come away with a win. I’m really optimistic.

I’m interested to see who Sam starts with, but we’ve got players to come on to drastically change the game.

I know the players had their Christmas party last week, but there seems to be a maturity in the squad now which means there would not be any issues with going away and having a good time.

As this is my last column before the big day, I’d like to wish all Shropshire Star readers a very Merry Christmas.
