The 20-year-old has made an emphatic start to life at Shrewsbury, who are unbeaten in the four matches he has played at the heart of Sam Ricketts’ defence.

Williams penned a two-and-a-half-year deal at Montgomery Waters Meadow in January to bolster Town’s backline and add some much-needed pace to the defensive ranks.

The former Old Trafford starlet has won praise from his experienced colleague for stepping out of academy football to play senior football for the first time.

“He looks like he has the making of being a good, good player,” said Waterfall, who is expected to partner Williams in a back three for Town against AFC Wimbledon today.

“He’s got pace in abundance which obviously helps him get out of trouble if he ever needs to.

“He’s been a breath of fresh air since he’s come in, he’s a good lad as well, he’s willing to work and learn. That’s always nice when a young lad comes.

“Fair play, he could’ve stayed in an under-23 side at Man United but he’s come down to get games and I’d always advise young players to do that.

“He’s quite a funny lad, typical young and lad laid back but he’s a nice lad. He’s willing to learn and work hard.

“I’m sure when he improves and gets older he’ll go on to have a good career.”

Williams was highly-rated at United and was called up to senior training by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over the festive period.

“How long do you stay in an under-23 side? He could’ve got to 22 or 23, two or three years on and not played any senior games,” added Waterfall.

“I personally think he’s better off coming and playing in League One, a good level of football.

“If he can rack some games up who knows what the future holds for him.”

Former Lincoln skipper Waterfall, who had played 41 times for Town this season, feels he is thriving in Town’s new system.

“It suits me in the middle of a back three,” he added. “We’ve got Ro-Shaun in with a hell of a lot of pace aside me now and Bolts (James Bolton) and Omar (Beckles) on the left in the last two games.

“I try to go and win the first balls if I can and let those lads cover round me. I’m enjoying it, we’ve had four good results, it’s always more enjoyable when you’re winning and not losing football matches.”

Meanwhile, Shrewsbury have announced a season ticket price freeze for the 2019/20 season.

Early-bird adult season tickets can be purchased until April 14.

Category A early-bird season tickets for adults – blocks one, two and 16 – are £370, with Category B £310.

Season tickets for under-12s are still free.
