Boss Sam Ricketts has revealed new Shrewsbury Town contract talks are on the back-burner while the club focus on improving their league position.

A handful of first-team players see their terms run to an end this summer and Ricketts says talks will edge forward ‘as and when’.

The Town chief, whose side sit in the relegation places – third-bottom in League One – insists he knows the direction he wants to take the club, but pulling away from danger is the immediate priority.

Captain Mat Sadler, Shaun Whalley, James Bolton and Anthony Grant all see their Montgomery Waters Meadow deals run out this summer – though the latter has an option for an extra year.

“We’ll start edging down those lines as and when,” said Ricketts when asked about contract talks.

“It works both ways with the club and individuals as well, we’ll continue talking to players as and when.”

Ricketts last month handed a new deal to out-of-contract winger Abo Eisa before sending him on loan to League Two Colchester.

The boss was asked whether he had a clear idea of who he wanted to remain at the club.

He responded: “I think you have idea of where you want to take the club, certainly.

“I see a clear direction for the club but the most important thing is the immediate future and getting some results.”
