Forward John-Lewis, 29, went down in a heap in the 13th minute of the FA Cup third round tie against Stoke City after no contact.

It appeared John-Lewis, who playing on the left wing for the second time in recent games, twisted his left knee and was in immediate agony when prone on the pitch, calling for assistance.

He was stretchered off with Grant saying multiple Town fans found the injury hard to watch.

John-Lewis overcame a serious knee injury, not for the first time in his career, prior to joining Shrewsbury with Newport County.

Grant said: "Everybody loves Lenny. It was very disappointing. A few boys had tears in their eyes, obviously.

"He's a very big influence around the changing room, so it wasn't nice to see.

"We'll all stick together and look after him, hopefully he'll mend very soon."

John-Lewis was seen after the game with his left knee in a brace and using crutches,

Town led against Stoke in first half added time, given because of the injury, as Ollie Norburn fired in from the penalty spot.

They held on until the 78th minute when veteran substitute Peter Crouch finished smartly on the volley.

Grant felt Town should have confirmed their place in the fourth round with a second goal through Aaron Amadi-Holloway, rather than settled for a replay.

He added: "I thought we should've won the game. We had the chance with Azza at 1-0, that would've been 2-0 and they would've found it hard to break us down.

"They bring the experience of Crouch and everybody knows what he does, he's put the ball in the back of the net."
