Chief executive Brian Caldwell has urged Shrewsbury supporters to forget last season when judging boss John Askey's progress.

A crucial 2-1 victory over AFC Wimbledon on Saturday, courtesy of two Luke Waterfall goals in a second half turnaround, is believed to have have saved the job of under-pressure Askey.

Town supremo Caldwell believes the spirited fightback – a first away win of the season – showed that Salop players were still battling for former Macclesfield boss Askey.

And he reminded the Town faithful that remembering the almost unprecedented success of last season is not a helpful yardstick when assessing how Askey's five-month tenure has unfolded so far.

When asked if he was close to making major changes last week, he replied: "No I wouldn't say that, you're always looking at the situation, no matter what.

"We're trying to be patient throughout it. We're 17 games in now, you're always looking at how the team's getting on.

"Obviously it's been a frustration for us all, we're trying not to remember last season, a lot of the time we have to remember not to think about what happened last season but think about where we should be.

"Last year was a phenomenal season, let's not try to compare that.

"We try to support John as much as we possible can and we're delighted."

Caldwell continued: "John's obviously feeling pressure, we're all feeling it.

"It's a difficult time when, having played so well against Barnsley but to capitulate against Oxford, everyone's honest enough to admit that.

"At half-time I didn't see it coming. I thought the first half we were pretty dreadful but the second half showed the players are fighting for John."
