Shrewsbury winger Shaun Whalley a doubt for Tuesday's visit of Barnsley

Shrewsbury Town are likely to be without star winger Shaun Whalley for Tuesday's visit of Barnsley.

Whalley limped off after 77 minutes of Town's 2-0 defeat against Sunderland at Montgomery Waters Meadow. He came closest to scoring for the hosts after his free-kick found the angle of crossbar and post in the first half.

Town's No.7 injured his calf against the Black Cats and, while boss John Askey won't get a proper diagnoses until Monday, is a big doubt for the clash with Barnsley.

Askey said: "It's Shaun's calf. He'll probably struggle.

"He's had a bit of a niggle with his ankle as well. We'll have to see what it's like. Overall injury-wise we've done really well, nearly everybody's fit.

"We'll be disappointed if he can't play because he's the one that creates most.

"We won't know (more) until we go in on Monday or tomorrow."

Fellow winger Abo Eisa, who has missed six weeks with a knee ligament problem, returned to training late last week but is not thought to be ready to enter the action.

Striker Fejiri Okenabirhie is an option for Askey on the flanks.

The Town boss had switched to 3-5-2 before Whalley limped off and Askey may see the wing-back option, with two strikers, as the one that suits Town best for the Tykes visit on Tuesday.
