John Askey: Shrewsbury Town players gave everything

Boss John Askey praised his Shrewsbury players for their work rate despite losing their five-game unbeaten home run against Sunderland.

Two second half goals downed Askey's Town in front of a packed crowd of 9,007 at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

The opening, just before the hour, was a sickener for Salop as it shanked in off Omar Beckles right boot. The hosts had edged the first half against their illustrious visitors and had the better efforts on goal.

"I saw that the players give everything they've got. I thought for most of the game we competed really well with Sunderland," said the Town chief whose side lost at home for the first time since the opening day.

"We created a few chances, we're obviously disappointed with the goal we've given away because I don't think they'd done much until then."

Shaun Whalley went closest for Salop in the first half after his looping free-kick found the angle of post and bar.

Town also threatened from set-pieces as their early intensity proved too much for the Black Cats.

But Beckles' shanked clearance flew in past Joel Coleman and sub Luke O'Nien wrapped it up with an 84th minute second.

Askey added: "To concede that, from an own goal, was a bit of a kick in the teeth when we'd stopped them from playing.

"In the final third we need that bit of extra quality at times when we're breaking through. It was either the final pass or shot that we didn't have.

"Overall I was pleased with how we performed. We'd worked hard to stop them from playing and I thought we did that."
