Lee Angol wasn't sent on earlier because Shrewsbury needed more energy, says boss John Askey

Shrewsbury boss John Askey stressed that the reason top scorer Lee Angol remained on the bench until the 90th minute in the defeat at Fleetwood yesterday was performance-related.

Askey played a 4-4-2, starting with Fejiri Okenabirhie and Lenell John-Lewis, in the 2-1 defeat at Highbury Stadium.

He brought those two forwards off at half-time and opted to send on Aaron Amadi-Holloway, leaving four-goal striker Angol out of the action until added time.

The boss said other strikers would offer his team more energy, physicality and control of the game.

"When we were 4-4-2 we weren't in control of the game. When we were 4-3-3 we were in control of the game," Askey said.

"It was just through performances, really. We just needed a little bit more energy up front.

"I thought we'd get that with Fey and Lenny but we weren't able to get the ball up to them.

"Aaron going on gives us that bit more physical presence that you need in these conditions.

"To answer the question the reason we didn't put him on straight away was to try and get control of the game."
