Luke Waterfall admits Shrewsbury Town must do better after Scunthorpe defeat

Defender Luke Waterfall has vowed that Shrewsbury will respond from Saturday's disheartening reverse at Scunthorpe United.

The Iron won on home soil for the first time this season as Lee Novak's 55th minute winner proved the difference between the clubs in a dull affair.

John Askey's Town paid the price for not threatening the Iron goal when on top early on and were caught cold as the home side ran Shrewsbury ragged at the beginning of the second period.

Waterfall said: "We know how important the first five or 10 minutes are to the start of each half is.

"We knew that Scunthorpe, being the home side, were going to come out and have a go. We should've been prepared for that.

"We know we've go to do better, we spoke about it in there (the dressing room) and I'm sure we will do."

Askey's men were the better side in the first period but, by Waterfall's own admission, sloppy after the break.

They recovered later on after falling behind and passed up two or three presentable chances.

Defeat drops Salop down to 20th in League One – outside the relegation places on goal difference.

He added: "It's frustration again. I thought we did pretty well in the first half but just didn't capitalise on it.

"We started the second half sloppy in the first five or 10 minutes and didn't come out the blocks, they did.

"They got on top and we never truly recovered I don't think."

The Town stopper continued: "Apart from the first 10 of 15 minutes of the second half (we deserved something). Later we got to grips with it.

"In the first half we had one or two half-chances, if we'd have come away with a point I don't think anybody would have grumbled.

"It would have been a good point here."
