John Askey disappointed with 'lethargic' Shrewsbury Town showing

Frustrated Shrewsbury boss John Askey called out his side for not competing in a 'lethargic' start to the second half in the 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe.

Town shaded the first half of a dull encounter against a poor Scunthorpe side but created no clear-cut openings.

The Iron flew out of the blocks after the break and made Town pay with the only goal coming after 55 minutes through Lee Novak - and were it not for goalkeeper Joel Coleman the hosts could have had more.

Town passed up a couple of presentable opportunities later on but Greg Docherty and Lee Angol shot wide.

Askey said: "I'm obviously very disappointed. I thought there were spells in the game, especially first half, where I thought we played well.

"I went in at half-time quite happy at how we played. We came out the second half and for 15 minutes we didn't compete.

"That was the disappointing thing, we didn't win enough second balls and that's what cost us.

"The goal we gave away was disappointing because we'd not got up high enough and that's how they scored.

"We were lethargic, for whatever reason, for the first 10 minutes of the second half.

"When we changed it we looked as though we were going to get a goal and we should've scored."

Askey, whose side dropped to 20th in League One with just one win in nine, continued: "We were the better team first half and should go in scoring at least one.

"They came out and competed a bit more which we should've expected but we didn't.

"We thought we were going to carry on from what we did in the first half."
