Greg Docherty has caught the eye at the heart of John Askey’s midfield since completing his season-long loan switch from Steven Gerrard’s Rangers. The 21-year-old, who is highly thought of at Ibrox, joined Shrews rather than League One big-hitters Sunderland or options north of the border.

“To be fair it was very easy for me once I’d spoken to the chief exec and the manager,” said energetic box-to-box midfielder Docherty.

“It helps that he’s Scottish but he’s just a very genuine guy who’s probably the main reason I came down here.

“Right from the minute go they were patient with me, allowed me to take my time and assess options and they were always there in a good way.

“I sussed out the area, did my homework, spoke to guys that had played here before and obviously Rangers’ vice-captain Connor Goldson made a name for himself here.

“There you go right away, I knew you could do well, he got his move to Brighton. It’s a great platform and stepping-stone.

“That’s what Brian and the manager said to me, to go and express yourself down here and you never know.”
