Salop signed Steve Arnold last week following an impressive trial spell and are on the verge of getting somebody in to push him for the No.1 shirt.

Huddersfield Town’s Joel Coleman has been linked with a loan move. The 22-year-old has made 14 appearances in his two years with the Terriers.

Former Cardiff City goalkeeper Ben Wilson, who spent the back end of last season on loan at AFC Telford United, was on trial but it is no longer with the club.

“We’re hoping by the end of today or tomorrow that can be resolved,” said boss John Askey.

“I’ve never been at a football club where you’ve wanted somebody to think that they’re the No.2.

“It’s important that they do push each other and hopefully, if the keeper comes in who we want, it’ll be very much like that.”

Askey has been busy over the past several days, firstly snapping up 28-year-old Arnold on a two-year contract.

Former Colchester united and Port Vale man Doug Loft, who also caught the eye on trial, was awarded a one-year deal on Saturday, and fellow midfielder Charlie Colkett arrived on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

Josh Laurent then joined from Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee on Monday.

When asked if getting a goalkeeper in would complete Salop’s summer business, Askey said: “You’re always trying to improve – hopefully by playing together and getting to know each other throughout the season.

“You’re always looking at other players that could come in to make us stronger, but at the moment I’m happy with what we’ve got.

“If things are not working out, you look at other things. But pretty much, if we get a keeper then that’s it.

"We’re looking in better shape now than we were two weeks ago."
