Assistant manager Chris Doig also joins Hurst at Portman Road. The duo spent 19 months at Shrewsbury Town, reaching Wembley twice this season.

Hurst said the opportunity to move to Ipswich was too good to turn down.

He said: “I’d like to thank Shrewsbury for giving me the chance to manage at League One level."

“It was an unbelievable season and just disappointing that we couldn’t cap it off in the way we would have liked to.

“I had an excellent relationship with everyone at the club and I’d like to wish Shrewsbury the best of fortunes going forward but when this opportunity came up, it was just too good to turn down."

Livingston manager David Hopkin, who has guided his side to successive promotions to the top tier in Scotland, is current bookies' favourite to replace Hurst at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Uwe Rosler, Keith Curle, Lee Clark and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink – all of who have Football League management experience – are also in the running.
