Shrewsbury Town will play in League One again next season, after they were defeated 2-1 at Wembley for the second time this year.

The Shrews contested the play-off final with Rotherham United and took them to extra time, but Richard Wood’s second goal on 103 minutes was enough to take the Millers to the Championship.

Defender Wood opened the scoring on 32 minutes before Shrewsbury’s Alex Rodman pegged Rotherham back after 58 minutes.

The scores remained level until 13 minutes into extra time, when Wood struck again after a free kick.

It means Shrewsbury’s Wembley ‘curse’ goes on, with the Shropshire team having never won a game at the national stadium in five times of asking.

Their last trip to Wembley was last month, when they faced Lincoln City in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy.

Victory for Shrewsbury would have brought second tier football to Shropshire for the first time in 40 years.

But Salop can still look back on a special season, in which they finished third in the league.

They were eight points ahead of fourth-placed Rotherham, and over the course of the season they conceded fewer goals than any other League One team other than champions Wigan Athletic.
