Paul Hurst tells his Shrewsbury side to write themselves into history

Paul Hurst has urged his Shrewsbury troops to write their name in blue and amber history.

Town can secure second tier football for the first time in 29 years with a win against Rotherham at Wembley tomorrow.

Breaking the Wembley hoodoo would cap a fine season in which Hurst’s underdogs have risen from suggested relegation fodder to first automatic and now play-off contenders.

Hurst believes, should his side secure a place in the Championship, they would be remembered in style at Montgomery Waters Meadow for generations to come – likewise the jubilant celebrations after the victory against Charlton earlier this month.

“It would be great for that team. If we were successful I’m sure you’d see pictures that would be in place here for many, many years,” said the Town chief.

“If I’m still here and came back and visited in 20 years time, I’d like to think the chances are you’d see memories from that day. There may be some from Charlton, I don’t know.

“There may be some from the Checkatrade but that won’t sit as proudly compared to winning promotion.”

Tomorrow is the final chance for for fans to watch Hurst’s team this season, who many supporters have lauded as the best team to wear blue and amber in more than a generation.

The final is Town’s 62nd match of the season, more than any other league club not including European fixtures. The Wembley showpiece comes 296 days after Lenell John-Lewis’s added time winner on the opening day of the season against Northampton.

Even with a Town defeat tomorrow, Hurst added: “You’d be seen as people still very fondly remembered for the season.

“People like Dean Henderson, Ben (Godfrey) and Carlton (Morris) – loans that I don’t think we’ll see back here – certainly not if we’re League One. Would we have a chance if we’re Championship? Maybe. I haven’t had those conversations.”
